Crooked Candidates 2010

CREW's Crooked Candidates 2010 highlights office-seekers with scandal-littered pasts and histories of questionable ethics. With more than 2,300 people running for office this year, this list is likely only the tip of the iceberg. We invite anyone who thinks we’ve missed a particularly disgraceful candidate to email Tipline@citizensforethics.org with their suggestion.

Worst Governors

CREW's Worst Governors report provides in-depth analysis of 11 elected officials who have pushed their states' best interests aside in favor of their supporters, families, political parties and bank accounts. Though ethics laws, campaign finance rules and financial disclosure regulations vary from state to state, CREW found these governors' proclivities for corruption cronyism and self-enrichment outweighed their competency, integrity and commitment to transparency.

UnderInvestigation.org is a comprehensive list of members of Congress who are likely facing investigations by the Department of Justice, House ethics committee, Senate ethics committee, and Office of Congressional Ethics. UnderInvestigation.org describes each member’s investigation status and background, as well as each government body conducting an inquiry. Due to the secrecy surrounding these investigations, the list is compiled from press reports, including revelations garnered from a leaked House ethics committee memo obtained by The Washington Post on October 30, 2009. The site will be updated as new information becomes available.

For years some members of Congress have made a lucrative side business of trading earmarks for campaign contributions. These members treat the federal treasury – meaning our tax dollars -- like their own personal piggy bank, handing out big money contracts to favored donors, friends, and family members. In exchange, these members often receive campaign donations, employment for relatives, or charitable contributions. CREW’s interactive graphic, The Pork Parade, shows just how this process works using the late Rep. John Murtha’s method as an example. Move your cursor over the text below to learn how these individuals and businesses are connected to members of Congress and how much all of this costs us.

CREW's fifth annual Most Corrupt Members of Congress report provides detailed analysis of the unethical and sometimes illegal activities of 15 congressmen and women who have most egregiously betrayed the public's trust. The report's accompanying website, www.CREWsMostCorrupt.org, offers short summaries of each member's transgressions as well as the full-length profiles and all accompanying exhibits.

CREW has launched a new directory of state-based good government groups to assist activists and journalists in holding public officials accountable for abusing the public trust. The guide, Directory of State-based Government Watchdogs, lists organizations focusing on state and local government in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The directory can be found online at statewatchdoggroups.org.

Federal contractors, corporations, and trade groups all conduct business with the government with relatively little non-governmental oversight. CorporateCrackdown.org's mission is to change that. This new CREW website will hold accountable those who unduly influence government officials, overcharge taxpayers, or sacrifice the public good for private benefit by exposing their activities and taking action where appropriate. The latest news, reports, and blogs on corporate malfeasance will be posted on CorporateCrackdown.org to educate the public on those companies that use their power and influence to prioritize profit at the expense of Americans' interests.

CREW's DELLception.org brings together the latest news on Dell's refusal to honor its "Next Day Service" warranty, the latest actions by CREW to hold the company to its word, and a compendium of Dell customers' horror stories. If Dell won't honor its warranties, CREW, with help from the public, will hold Dell accountable.

CREW’s BermanExposed.org is dedicated to exposing lobbyist Richard Berman’s activities, his myriad front groups and projects, his employees’ work, and his firm’s tactics in acting in the interest of the tobacco, alcohol, chain restaurant, and tanning industries.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is failing in its mandated mission to administer and enforce regulations governing the financing of federal elections. Violations of federal campaign finance law are likely to go unpunished because of the partisan deadlock that has rendered the FEC a toothless tiger - or, in the words of one major newspaper: The Little Agency That Wouldn't. CREW's FixtheFEC.org website monitors complaints that are filed with the agency and raises public attention to the urgent need for the FEC to start fulfilling its legal responsibilities.

CREW posts all documents responsive to our many Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests on Scribd.com - the largest social publishing and reading site in the world. Visit and bookmark www.Scribd.com/CREWFOIA to review these documents and keep up-to-date on CREW's latest FOIA requests.
